Hey guys this is really interesting:
Even thought this is true that third graders should get more sleep (at least 10 hours) it would be difficult to get children at that age to go to bed at the same time to wake up at the same time and do the same on weekends. You could try to reward them. At the same time it will cost you a lot and the funny thing is most parents reward their children with food which leads to obesity. I cannot think of any solutions that would really work. Does anyone have a solution to the problem?

Hey I think the problem with children not going to bed could be caused by the parents not being more strict on there children. Because I know with my parents if they told me to go to bed their would be no question ask. I would have to be in bed by the time my parents stopped talking. I think these day parents take it to easy on there children by letting them do whatever they want with out any limits. That why there children do not go to bed now when there parents ask them to.
I agree that a child's bedtime and sleep routine has much to do with the routine set by the parents. If the parents do have a set sleeping routine for the child then the hours of sleep the children usually get will vary. If the decision is left up to the child then most likely the child is not going to have a set routine. If the parents make the decision to have a set sleep routine, so that the children will sleep ten hours, and strictly enforce it, then I think it is possible. Its the idea of setting a routine and sticking with it. I also do not think that food is needed to reward children for sleeping. Like I said before it should be required routine set by the parents and the children should obey as they should obey any other rules.
I agree with everyone else. But I would also say another problem that is raised is the lack of authority at home. With the increasing number of single family households, and families living in poverty, the parents are home a lot less. Single parents usually have to work multiple jobs or even long hours so there isn't anyone home to enforce bed time. Same goes for teen parents who only have a high school education the only jobs they can get are the ones no one wants during horrible hours. So in many cases their is no on home to enforce bedtime!
