The Best Solution for Elderly?
In thinking about care for our elders in society, a lot of new advances for compensation for our elderly has risen. Among services provided, I think nursing home care is still most prevalent to date. It seems to me that once older people go in to nursing homes, they become worse. My grandmother, for example went into a nursing home because my aunt, my moms oldest sister couldn't care for my grandmother like she needed to. A family decision was to place my grandmother in a nursing home. I would go and visit my grandmother and it seemed like every time I would go and visit her, another illness would happen or something was always wrong. I know her being around different elders, there are a lot of germs that can be contracted. But the illnesses my grandmother was getting wasn't contagious things. What took me for a loop was when my mother and I went to visit her and she had bruises on her. I had heard about workers at nursing home not really adequately caring for those that are admitted. I feel like families need to further with options because what may be the easiest solution doesn't mean it is the best solution. If more people were informed about the different ways or caring for our older people, the happier families will be. It may be good to give the individual options if they can competently make decisions for themselves. So much goes on behind closed doors, and families need to be more concerned about how their family members are being treated.

I too agree that a family should consider other forms of care when deciding whether to place their loved one in a nursing home. From my experience in a nursing home, I have witnessed several forms of neglect and abuse. I am for nursing homes that provide quality care. But as we all know, those that are the best are very expensive. The best advice I could give is to plan ahead for a situation such as this, save and look around. Many nursing homes will say this and that but once you leave that loved one, it is a whole other ball game. I think people have knowlege of other means for caring for a loved one but I also think it can take a toll on that individual and family. For example, medication is much cheaper in a nursing home than taking care of a loved one at home. Many insurance companies will not pay for some of the caregiving items a loved one might need compared to if they were in a facility. I know a few of my residents who went home because family members thought that they could take care of them but months later, returned because they had fallen ill at home because of improper care. I just have to say nursing home abuse does take place from what I have witnessed as an employee and families too need to visit and stay well informed on those who are taking care for their loved ones.
